Martell Culinary Spoons Painting
Recently we finished another huge miniature project. What an oxymoron right. Anyway, this time we get to do 300 spoons in 2 weeks time. @_@ I know right. Vinn was having her vacation leaving me to handle this massive project on my own.
This is the finished product. The client wanted 5 fully painted spoons of batik design. We have our new miniature package up if you are looking for similar products. Check it out.

The spoons are smaller than they seem and doing 300 of them is difficult when you have so many cats around waiting to sit on the spoons and leave their fur on the spoons.
After we are done, we still have to give the spoons a good few layers of gloss to make them shine. Finishing touches are very important when it comes to art. It is of course hazardous to inhale the fumes from the spray lacquer so we had to gear ourselves up properly for this task.

Bottom of the spoon was also painted with love, sweat and of course much curses during the journey.:)
The result was worth it.. look at the finished spoons in the packaging, so pretty! Packaging weren’t done by us this time though.
It was a learning experience… we ended up splurging on good acrylic paints in order to finish faster. Cheap paints are less pigmented and are not as opaque. It usually takes a great deal more layers to complete the painting compared to using expensive but good quality paints.

They are just normal ceramic spoons.. Those that caterers put mini bite size food in.

or did you guys have to buy a certain type of spoon to paint over it?
Hi Rick, we basically use normal acrylic paint for this project. The cheaper the paint, the more layers you have to paint on to the spoon. So get decent quality acrylic to begin with. The gloss is just normal lacquer spray that has a glossy finish. Other than that, we just use brushes for the application and before we started painting, we had to paint on ceramic/glass medium onto the spoon so that any subsequent paint will have something to grip on to instead of sliding on the non-porous surface. Thanks for getting back to me. Can these spoons be used or washed? I did some searching for food safe paints and finishes and stuff, but nothing that I am comfortable doing… Is the only way to fire everything? Any guidance would be awesome!!!
